Chiltern Sinfonietta Summer Concert: Elgar, Poulenc and Beethoven
Free Admission
Our summer concert closes the season with radiant writing for strings by Elgar, a Poulenc sonata in a rare orchestral guise, and the symphony that changed everything.
Overview
The Chiltern Sinfonietta ends its season in Victoria Hall, Tring with a programme built around three very different kinds of daring: Elgar writing for strings alone, Poulenc’s wit reimagined for flute and orchestra, and Beethoven tearing up the rulebook.
We are delighted to welcome flautist Janna Huneke as our soloist. As always the evening is informal, accessible and affordable, and everyone is welcome.
The programme
- ElgarIntroduction and Allegro for StringsA big-hearted showcase for string orchestra and solo quartet. Some of the most generous music Elgar ever wrote.
- PoulencFlute Sonata, arranged by Lennox BerkeleySoloist: Janna Huneke, fluteBerkeley’s orchestration opens out one of the best loved of all flute works without losing an ounce of its charm.
- BeethovenSymphony No 3, the EroicaThe piece that stretched what a symphony could be, from the great funeral march to the blazing finale.
